The current Tallahassee Commission’s narrow majority should NOT be able to tie the hands of future commissions on their way out the door.
The reason is simple: the city manager should be accountable to the entire Commission — not protected by two commissioners. If three commissioners can hire a city manager, a majority of the Commission should be able to remove one when circumstances warrant it. Otherwise, one commissioner effectively holds veto power over the will of the other three.
That's not accountability.
That's protection.
Three of the five Commission seats are up for election this year. Voters will choose a new Commission — we shouldn't make it harder for that Commission to exercise the authority voters just gave it.
We should not change the rules today to protect yesterday's decisions from tomorrow's voters.
As a candidate for City Commission Seat 3, I believe the voters — not a political majority trying to lock in its decisions before an election — should have the final say.
